Intrawest appears to be done, nice timing with the looming Olympics.

Intrawest was a disaster for skiing. Good riddance.

Wont argue that point. Had the pleasure of attending a conference this
summer in Collingwood ON at Blue Mountain. Nice place (small hill,
almost laughable), decent restaurants, nice accommodations, BUT,
expensive beyond belief. It really felt like their hand was in your
wallet 24/7

Sic semper land developers.

American Skiing Co was the first. There will be others
who think that ski areas are amenities for housing
developments.

Well, yeah. Put up some lifts and the surrounding land goes up in price
by an order of magnitude or two. What real estate developer can resist
that. "You mean I can buy it for $1000/acre and resell it for $100,000
an acre?"

Most "ski-resort" companies are actually in the real estate business.
Running a ski resort is just an unpleasant task necessary to inflate the
price of their condo developments. This is news?

If the ski operation has been operated as a loss leader to attract
resort customers and thus real estate customers, the skiing is in
danger once the real estate runs out, just as in any resource-
exploitation-based development.
