On the subject of sprint falls, in the men's team final (10 teams)
today, a trip by one skier took down 6 others. That created the
separation that the others couldn't overcome. The video of that can
be seen at http://www.nrk.no/tv/ (sport, langrenn).

Also on the subject of falls, at the women's sprints last week at Davos
the public report was Kikkan Randall got "tangled up" with Charlotte
Kalla in the quarters. Looking at the video, it seems more that Kikkan
went from the inside position out wide on a right corner and skied into
Kalla's path. Plus, at least in this race, she had been frequently
following through wide with her left ski, and that's what Kalla, who
was trying to avoid her, caught.

That was quite a fall indeed.

The slow-mo video and talks with the Norwegian skier who fell both seems
to indicate that it started when a Russian skier (inadvertently) stepped
on the tail end of Øystein's ski as he was going around the corner.

During the ensuing mess the four front-runners managed to leave nearly
all of the rest behind.

Yes, I meant to say he took down five skiers, as four did get clear, tho
one came from the back and I assumed he or his team was eventually
caught. What struck me was why they have so many teams (10) in the
finals. Dusseldorf is a wide course, but the nature of sprinting
increases the risks as the numbers grow. And the competition among the
men seems to be tighter than with the women.

The close up of the mens team race and crash is on the Swedish station,
at http://svt.se/svt/jsp/Crosslink.jsp?...port&from=menu (down
towards bottom, enlarge to full screen on right). Anyone see the
women's race there?

The Swedish skier passes from the rear of the carnage and see how one
skier (the Russian?) has to take off on one ski. Talk about doing the
"Russian drill."
