what to do during long drives to the mountain
I'm going on a day trip with a friend that I don't know well.
just want to know what people do during long drives up to the mountain and back. 4 hours of awkward silence to and from the mountain wouldn't be fun. |

There are a couple of proven methods I could suggest, but they are now frowned upon and would eventually be discovered in a USENET archive somewhere. Their publication would probably prevent me from gaining Senate confirmation. I'm not in line for anything, but stranger things have happened. I'm guessing you're not married, or you would be used to long silences. Here's one off the top of my head: As soon at the ride starts, use a stick to poke your friend in the ribs every 5 or 10 seconds. Don't poke too hard. Don't use a sharp stick. You're looking for a more tickly/spasmodic type of response from your friend. Keep this up until you are asked to leave your friend alone. You are now free to enjoy the drive in silence, since you no longer have an obligation to acknowledge your friend. I imagine on the return trip all you will have to do is show your friend the stick. Or buy a bus ticket. If they ever allow cell phone use on airplanes, I'm going to attack that problem in the same way, but my stick will be playing a harmonica. John |

Read a book? I can't read while I'm a passenger, but some can. In fact my daughter often reads to me when I drive us to the mountains. When I'm driving back from the mountains at night the Coast to Coast radio show is often pretty entertaining www.coasttocoastam.com . A good mix of science, space aliens, future predictions, etc. Tonight, in addition to a couple of other topics, they're discussing chupacabras. When the topic is good, I think it's great stuff for a road trip. |

Personally I just talk about a load of nonsense and have the radio on. It's hard to talk for 4 hours unless you have everything in common. - Dave. -- The only powder to get high on, falls from the sky. http://www.vpas.org/ - Snowboarding the worlds pow pow - Securing your e-mail The Snowboard FAQ lives here - http://rssFAQ.org/ |

MP3, iPod, or similar, w/full cover headphones. Or, take a chance & try to find common ground. You might surprise yourself. I kind of liked the sharp stick idea though; simple & effective. |
