Default Hostels at Whistler - anyone been?

Aloha,
Has anyone stayed at either the Southside Lodge hostel or the UBC
Whistler Lodge hostel? Would like to hear your opinion. Southside
looks kinda dreary from the website pics and the UBC one looks nicer
but farther from the mountain. Am planning my first trip to Whistler
this March. Decisions decisions. Thanks in advance.
Happy trails,
-Jenn

I have stayed at the Whistler backpackers. It was not the Hyatt regency, and
there was a nice bong on the kitchen table. Certain, errrm, supplies were
readily available if you're into that sort of thing, LOL.

There was only one waste of flesh & oxygen at the hostel when I was there,
everyone else was really cool. It is close to the lifts, and the place right
up the street from there on the way to the lift has REALLY good breakfast.
Watch out though, the run down to that gondola gets REALLY icy at the end of
the day from everyone sideslipping down, and lotsa beginners and
out-of-control, tired freaks at that resort. I had more collisions with
people while riding there (for 8 days) than during the entire rest of my
boarding career - only one of those collisions was my fault. Not sure if its
the atmosphere or what, everyone seems to think running into others is fun.
I think its dangerous, and it was a good lesson on how to watch out for
other people for whom safety is not a concern. I guess lawsuits are not a
concern for them either...

I haven't had a collision with anyone since that trip. G
