I am still getting snow alerts from Val d'Isere and down to below 1800m.

It's probably still going pretty strong as their web site
http://www.valdisere.com/gb/montagne/meteo/meteo.php is also showing low new
snow but take this with a pinch of sel.

Default Anything left in Europe??

Here's a short e-mail I received from one of my friends who is currently
doing the Haute Route:

"I survived Day 2 Swiss Boot Camp, barely. Today we climbed the Stralhorn
from Saas Fee and then decended a humongous glacier to Zermatt. We
started at 0530 AM with headlamps and skiied a sheet of ice down 500 ft
where we began the climb at 9500ft. We were on the top, 13500 ft, 3.5
hours later. It was blowing like hell and we took some photos, then skiied
ice, breakable crust, wind pack for about 1000 ft then we skiied down the
Gornergrat Glacier via Adler Pass, dodging crevasses and frozen chicken
heads with lots of frozen hardpack thrown in, down to the valley between
the Rothern and Gornergrat ski areas, only to find the lift out of the
valley to the Rothern area closed for the season. So it was about 2000
vertical, 3 mile walk, down to town in our ski boots carrying a backpack and
skiis.

We are back in Zermatt for the nite then it,s on to Chamonix over the next 7
days climbing numerous 4000M peaks along the way. Why am I doing this?, I
don,t know - must be unresolved issues from childhood. Whatever this is, it
is not a vacation."

.... how badly do you want to ski????

Looks good, the only small drawback I can see is it closed on Sunday :-)

It's snowing in Chamonix town right now! Unfortunately the lifts are now
closed until July (even Grands Montets).

Tignes (Grande Motte only) is open this week, closes from 10th May to 18th
June

It was certainly nice last week :-) The pistes didn't seem to freeze too
hard overnight so fillings stayed in place. Then four plus inches of fresh
in Le Fornet on Friday morning and more or less deserted. Headed over to
the Bellevarde after a couple of runs due to zero visibility and on returning
a couple of hours later (now in sunshine) to find it still deserted but
comprehensively tracked out 100M either side of the pistes?!? Bloody ghost
skiers.

Ho hum. Only eight months to go 'til winter.

Just returned from an amazing week in Norway / Sweden - first three days
touring in the Lyngen Alps - staying on board a boat and then climbing to
the summit and descending back to the boat - we were with two guides from La
Grave who kept stating "that you will not get better than this" as we went
down another amazing decsent back to the beach and boat!

Then on from the Tromso region to Narvik for a day, resort there still
open - next day early start and went to Riksgrasnen on the Swedish border,
this resort does not shut till June and has plenty of the white stuff - plus
as we had earnt out turns we did three heli acsents which was just superb -
so yes there is snow still around if you're prepared to go and find it!!

Regards

WC

I am really, REALLY jealous!

That's my favourite part of the world - though I never managed skiing
there. Anyone who has the chance should go there.
