Les Arcs connections

We're thinking of going to Les Arcs for a week next March, but one of
us remembers that the links between the different ski areas are often
shut due to high winds. Is this something we should be worried about?

Looking at the map, it appears Arc 1800 would be the best bet. We've
no interest in nightlife, but will be eating out in restaurants most
evenings. Any thoughts?

No. They've never been shut in the 4 weeks I have spent there and I
can't see that they would shut them all anyway. You just might have to
queue at the one that is open. There's always a bus/taxi. I think the
link to La Plagne might be a different matter though!

1800 is the best for restaurants, and all nightlife for that matter, but
it is quiet compared to other resorts. It has the best location for
everything IMNSHO.

I've known the main links between 16/1800 and 2000 to be shut, but
it's not common, certainly. But it's not _that_ unusual for the
cable-cars to shut and leave just a couple of rickety old chairlifts
open for vital connections.

I'd be very surprised if they'd not designed it to be safe in higher
winds than would close the existing lifts.

1800 is the best for restaurants, and all nightlife for that matter, but
it is quiet compared to other resorts. It has the best location for
everything IMNSHO.

You might also consider staying in Bourg St Maurice, as there's a
funicular runs from there straight up to 1600. If you're on a budget
you can find cheaper accomodation there (I'd recommend the Hostellerie
du Petit St. Bernard) and get a 15% reduction on your ski pass. (At
least, this was the case up until about three years ago - not been
since.)

On the down side, there's virtually no nightlife, but a fair range of
eateries are at your disposal.

Would suggest Bourg St Maurice itself, especially as you're not
after nightlife. It's an attractive, quiet small town, with
cheaper accommodation, and there are some excellent, good value
restaurants, such as 'Le Refuge'. With the funicular taking just
7 minutes to Arcs 1600 (it runs every 20 mins) you are on the
slopes in no time. For anyone who is driving from the UK, staying
in BSM also gives the option of trying other resorts (La
Rosière/St Foy 15 mins drive, Val d'Isère/Tignes 30 mins, La
Plagne, 20 mins, 3 Valleys Méribel etc 30-40 mins).

No problem whatsoever getting between 1600/1800/Vallandry etc,
although Arcs 1950/2000 can sometimes suffer from the winds you
mention.

Still if you are after immediate access to the pistes within easy
reach of 1600/Vallandry etc, Arcs 1800 is probably your best bet.
Careful though, it's a huge, sprawling place and some buildings
are a fair walk away from the lifts (agencies etc tend to
'forget' this fact).

For future reference, if anyone is looking for self-catering
accommodation in Bourg St Maurice, I shall be letting a studio as
well as a 3 bed flat in a very quiet building a minute's walk
from the station with effect from early Jan, as well as a couple
of flats (1 & 2 bed) up in Arcs 2000 from Feb.
