Salmon Hills Future Unknown
I previously posted a message reporting the reopening of Salmon Hills.
This is true as far as I know however, you must all know that it is uncertain wether I will be working at Salmon Hills and that it is also uncertain if the grooming will be as meticulous as in the past. I sure would hope so because even if I don't work there I sure would like to ski a lot. The future of Salmon Hills remains to be seen and I would love to see it expand and improve on what we started. I would hate to see it take a step backwards and dismiss what we fought and worked so hard for. Hans |

Maybe they will do a combination of skiing and snowmobiling. Byrncliff Resort (http://www.byrncliff.com/) does a reasonable job managing both. In the winter they are primarily a Nordic ski resort that also serves snowmobiles. I've skied there several times without any hassles with the snowmobile crowd. |

The only place where the ski trails and the snowmobile trails are close together is next to the lodge and they approach from different sides of the lodge. The lodge is in an open area where breezes are common. I think that helps. The ski trails are on the golf course and surrounding woods. The snowmobile trails go out much farther. |

Salmon Hills Future Unknown
I did hear from a reliable source that the new owners of Salmon Hills are
also purchasing a local RV camp, seriously. Well, I don't want to say anything is impossible, but I am going to speculate that RVing and sledding (snowmobiling) go more hand-in-hand than RVing and XC skiing. It is reality that most of the acreage around Salomon Hills Resort, particularly the south side of the Salmon Reservoir is open to snowmobiling. It is ironic that snowmobilers know Salmon Hills has that large piece of property on the north side of the reservoir that is closed to their sleds. In the context of Salmon Hills Resort I disagree that sledding and XC skiing could coexist. I have been skiing at Salmon since 1997. Occasionally a sledder "stumbles" onto the XC trails. Simply put they do no belong there. Due to the layout of many of Salmon's XC runs they would pose a significant hazard to skiers. I also heard the Salmon no longer has its original Piston Pulley. It was "returned" to creditors once the bank foreclosed. If that is true, the new owners will need to obtain some sort of grooming machine. This might explain Hans G's 12/24 note on to this group. It did not sound nearly as "positive" on Salmon's future as his previous communications have. Joe "Mitch Collinsworth" wrote in message r.cornell.edu...
