Default Skiing in Austria

Rod

Also try websites
http://www.crystalski.co.uk/ - dont always get things right & novice staff &
dont answer phones at pre departure svces
http://www.inghams.co.uk/ - better quality co than Crystal & worth paying a bit
of extra dosh, quality staff
http://www.equity.co.uk/ - prices initially look high - but they incl everything
- skis, boots, lift pass supps, etc. V. experienced
http://www.rocketski.com/J_homepage.asp - equity without the inclusions

I went to Andorra for my v first skiing hols in y2k. To compare Andorra

to
Austria - well there's no comparison.
I'm an Austrian fan, but trying to be objective, here's my pros & cons

of
Austria against Andorra
PROs
so much better scenary, incl mountains, buildings (so much wood)
Skiing above & below tree lines
Better food
no green runs (could be a conn)
quieter - fewer queues for lifts
They have there own history & atmosphere - its just there, cant explain,

but
andorra just seems to have purpose build resorts that, quite frankly

look like
it.

CONNs
more expensive, but not as much as most people think. Booze is cheaper

in And,
Aus prices are similar to UK for beer, cheaper for wine.I r emember

brandy
being everso cheap in And.

If you do go, pick carefully the reosrt (as anywhere). I drove out this

year (
and last) and spent a week eack in Schladming & Obertauern.
Last year drove to St Anton & Schladming

Previously went to St Michael (with Equity) - village was v small with

little
going on, but Equity were absolutely excellent. Their free ski guide was

the
bees knees.
Also been to St Johann - great town but skiing runs were not that

extensive.

Thinking of going to Bad Gastein next.
NB Austria has really gone mad on their websites in the last few years -
theres load of good info out there. Try www.tiscover.com for one.

Need any more info, let me know ( i may have some town maps to email

you)

Hope that helps,
Andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks for this. Have you been to Andorra, and if so how would you

compare
them.? Andorra was fantastic for me, and I am worried I will be
dissapointed.

Schladming is excellent for all round skiers with plenty of blues on

4
different
mountains
St Anton would be too hard & busy
St Johann is OK but limited No of runs for all standards of skiing
Obertauern is again v good for beginners but inters & experts may

get
bored. Its
more assured of good snow earlier in winter aswell. But the ski runs

are
quite
short.

Austria is an excellent place to go & on the whole, queues are

shorter
than many
other places in the alps.

Many thanks
