I'm curious. What kind of questions and why YOU? I've asked guys
who looked like they knew what they were doing (tool belt, butt
crack, etc.) questions and it's never seemed to bother them.

I have low thresh hold for idiots, if you can not figure out who
works there. Why bother me?

Because it's difficult to find an orange-vest person and if you DO find
one (s)he may not be knowledgeable in the area of concern. YOU, OTOH,
look like you know what you're doing and you're shopping for the same
kind of stuff that I'm shopping for.

Two if you have done your work and understand what your doing your
questions would be reasonable and minimal. Not like the question I
heard at the bait store today, can you filet my 40 lb fish I do not
know how.

That's ridiculous. What kind of idiot would go fishing without knowing
what to do in the unlikely event that he actually caught something?

An example I am loading 20 60lb bags of cement on a cart, and a guy
comes over and asks me how to fix a crack in his cement. I am
sweating like a pig covered in dust and I want to stop and answer
questions of which the only answer involves more questions.

Definitely inappropriate!

Often guys in the trades wearing toolbelts are looking for side
work, and HD is a fertile place for people that need work.

Yeah, but those guys are standing outside, not inside where I'm looking.
This is SoCal where day-laborers of possible illegality abound and who
generally make more than minimum wage because they know how to do what's
wanted.

The clients I seek are not normally found in HD, and frequently the
type that are asking questions are not the sharpest utensils in the
drawer.

Indeed.
