I'm asking these OT questions here because these are ba. groups I

Later this summer I'd like to make some day explorations of the Sierra
back country region W of Lake Tahoe but as close to the Lake as
possible, _by road_, using a strictly "on road" vehicle (PT Cruiser or
Honda Element) and operating out of a home base in the vicinity of
Truckee.

Blackwood Canyon road is accesible by an "on road" vehicle at
least to the top of the pass and if the road quality continues
on the other side it could get you pretty far back there.
I haven't been much beyond the top of the pass.

Of course, I have no idea what damage this winter has done to
the roads. NFS forest roads are always a crapshot, what's
passable one year may be totally washed out the next. There
is a large network of roads in the Grouse Ridge/Old Man mountain
area. Most are reasonable if you have decent ground clearance.

You can drive to the New Bradley hut in the summer. Nice meadows
and views of Silver Peak.
