Did you actually do a google search on "mac codecs?" If not try that,
and in particular look at
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/avidivx.html
, at
least for the .avi files. .Asf files is a more difficult proposition.
A quick search on "mac .asf" suggests Flip4Mac is the only solution,
given VLC doesn't work:

Thanks for all the help, but I guess this is a Mac thing and it
looks as though K-lite is only for Windows. Well, if anybody has
any more suggestions, let me know. Still no luck with the file.
Well, yes. And I have downloaded and tried: WMP, VLC, Mplayer, DivX
player, DivX DoctorII, DivX Converter, etc. I'm running out of HD
space.
Guess the problem is that it is a WMV3 file.
I give up.
