Telluride, Crested Butte, and Steamboat in Colorado come to mind. Small
towns with real people, transportation systems, grocery stores, lots of
cultural activities, and fine ski areas.

But tough to make the rent for a ski bum with no car.

Big Mountain, and maybe Big Sky/Bridger in Montana. Sun Valley would work
too.

Somebody from California oughtta be able to suggest something there.
Utah does get snow, but it's still Utah.

Doesn't matter if you're there to ski.
