Workers at Gemsstock believe others will copy their technique

Workers at a Swiss ski resort have wrapped part of a retreating glacier in
reflective sheeting to protect it, they say, from global warming.
The Gurschen glacier, nearly 3,000m (10,000ft) above sea level, is melting
like many others worldwide, with the worst damage done in summer. "

'tree' skiing anyone ?

Interesting, but by no means surprising (at least, it doesn't surprise
me) to learn that glaciers go through periodic growth and shrinkage
periods. Well duh!

The real problem is that as no snow's persisting over the summer,
glacier level is now 20m below the cable station so skiers can't get
onto the glacier. So rather than grovel around each autumn to samm up
enough snow for a ramp, they're wrapping last year's ramp in a rescue
blanket to prevent it melting.

That's *so* Swiss!
