Default snowshoeing options in the southern sierra?

Hello:

I am looking to find out if and where there are reasonable snowshoeing
options in the Southern Sierra. I am well acquainted with routes in the
Tahoe and Central/High Sierras but since I am coming from LA, I would like
to know where the first set of "good" routes might be driving north from LA
(either on the west or east side of the Sierras).

I do not require any established "ski center" or "marked" trails. I am
merely looking for a solid, well-established snowpack offering complete
coverage whose trailhead is accessible by 4x4 Jeep. The TH needs to be high
enough in elevation such that I can drive to, and preferably above snowline
either on a plowed paved road or a non-plowed road that has well packed snow
that is navigable by 4x4 Jeep.

Looking at the Eastern Sierra along my last drive up to Mammoth, coverage
looked pretty good from Olancha north, but are there navigable as well as
Jeep-accessible trails there? Or do people with experience in this area
recommend driving an xtra hour north to better terrain with more varied
options?

What is the shortest drive time from LA to really good Sierra snowshoeing
options? I am limiting my query to the Sierras and excluding possibilities
around Big Bear/Mt High as coverage and snowpack depth are far superior in
the Sierras.

Thank you for your input.

Howard
