Default Schumi's crash & injury

No posts ? OK I will have an argument with myself then.

Doctor Fekyll: Schumi demonstrates that wearing a ski helmet is
sensible and should be made mandatory in law.

Herr Fyde: Bunkum ! Schumi was only a couple of ski-lengths from a
piste, moving at a slow speed. He could have just as easily tripped on
some icy concrete steps in his ski boots and brained himself. Is
helmet wearing going to be mandatory for those who are going out for
an evening's boozing in icey and slippery streets and passageways ?

Doctor Fekyll: Are you nuts ? That helmet just saved the life of the
world's greatest racing driver !

Herr Fyde: Good OK well I will agree to any legislation which mandates
that the world's greatest racing driver must wear a helmet when sking.
I refuse to wear a helmet because they are for raving Nancy-boys who
squat to pee.

Dr. Sceptic: The fact that he has such a serious head/brain injury
demonstrates very well just how little protection his helmet gave him.

Quite so. I think he would have been better protected in

- Old-style steel racing helmets. I used to have one of the 1960s
steel motor racing helmets which was very comforting. I have never
been sure what happened to it. It may have been 'borrowed'. Not all
were steel because I have seen 1960s bob-sled helmets which were not
steel. I could not confirm they were fiberglass because I could not
get under the liner to check.

- Or one of the Kevlar army helmets, which I have used for
ice-climbing because it offers much more comfort when there are huge
lumps bounding down on top of you and you are trying to do your best
to curl up small enough to fit inside the helmet.
They are designed to protect you from high speed fragments but the
liner suspends them enough that you could take considerable head-butt
impact. There is no way that that material is going to break and
permit penetration through to your skull. By the time there was enough
force to do that your head would have been knocked off your shoulders.
They're available in spiffy colors: Tree green, desert mush and
devilspawn UN blue. Over-whites must be available but I cannot recall
seeing any anywhere.
Also handy for attending the Winter Olympics because you can make an
ensemble with the addition of a flak jacket, which is what it is going
to take to get out of the Krasnodar region alive and in one piece, if
you ask me.

- Soviet tanker helmet. You can get winter liners for the tanker
helmets which makes them ever warmer. They are designed to protect you
when you get thrown against the ammunition containers, rather than
from ingress of sharp objects but from the sound of it, they would
have offered at least as much protection as Schumi's helmet. In fact
my dog-fur Ushanka would have offered as much protection as Schumi's
helmet.
They come already plumbed with earphones, for your digital music
device. Handy if you have a communications jack which converts USB to
Soviet 1950s A/68td-49 cannon plug.
