Probably the best place for beginners near NYC is Belleayre. They have
very long, gentle beginner trails and once the beginners master them
there are are easy, low intermediate trails at the top of the mountain.

It was either Ski or Skiing magazine that called Belleayre "the best
place to learn to ski in the east".

Its exit 19 off the NYS Thruway, about 2 hours from Manhattan.

I think there is a bus from Manhattan to Belleayre that leaves from Port
Authority every day and the price includes lift ticket.
