I bet all my money on Ohio State. I lost my mansion, my yacht, my
Harleys, the family jewels, the family bible. All my guns are gone
and my gold plated banjo and my collection of Rolex watches. The
bookies took everything even my yachting trophies and my brand new set
of Callaway golf clubs. They even took away my DVD collection of John
Wayne movies.


When I told my little girl that we were moving into a pup tent in a
vacant lot she looked up at me with those big blue eyes and started
crying, saying, "What am I going to tell my friends at school?" I had
no answer.

My mother in Florida sold my spare golf clubs and sold my lifetime
pass to Disney World. None of my brothers and sisters will talk to
me. My wife left me and took the dog. My magazine subscription to
Victoria's Secrets was cancelled.

All I have left is some spare change and a stack of tokens from the
VFW. I'm going to miss that dog. What will I do? How will I ever
find a gold plated banjo again?

Thank you. It's the plot of a new script I'm writing for a made for
TV movie.

Our hero is born and raised in South Detroit to a WW2 veteran who
raises 10 kids while working in an auto factory. Our hero works his
way up to independent wealth and retires and takes up golf. He loses
everything making bad bets. All he has left is spare change and VFW
tokens. He sells the tokens and buys a used set of golf clubs and
tries to become a professional golfer.

Will he succeed? Will he pull himself out of the depths of despair,
defeat, and dereliction? Will he be able to walk in the halls of the
champions again? To do so will take the heart of a Lion's fan and the
liver of Keith Richards.

I don't gamble (except the stock market) but if I did, then agreed that
betting against Michigan is the smart bet. With almost half a million
living alumni, that's a lot of people betting emotionally rather than
rationally, so the spread is skewed.

Used to be betting against Notre Dame was a good bet, but maybe not so
much anymore.
