Jackson Hole
 

I'm thinking about heading out to Jackson later in the season. I read on
their website that some parking at the mountain costs money gasp. How
soon do the free car parks fill up?

What's the drive like from downtown Jackson to the mountain? Is it a
winding road up the side of a mountain that benefits from 4WD, or is it a
flat 4-lane freeway that some POS with bald tyres could negotiate?

How far away is Grand Targhee from Jackson? Is it better to shift hotels
if I'm going to spend 3-4 days there?

Any hotel recommendations? I'm not interested in bunking up at $20 a
night in the hostel. I like a nice private room, en-suite, warm and
quiet. I'm there to ride, not to party. :)

Many questions, maybe too soon in the season with the group not back into
full swing yet.

Don't know about the bald tires. A regular car with reasonably good tires
should be okay unless there's a blizzard.

I wouldn't. You might choose to. One tip, though - if you plan on going to
Targhee from Jackson, and there is a big blizzard, you may want to consider
getting that 4WD, or arranging to take a bus from the Jackson area to
Targhee. I drove...

I stayed at the Super 8. It was good enough for me, the weekly rate was
cheap too.

If I get a job and enough vacation accrued soon enough, I'll be attempting
to make Steep and Deep Camp 2004 this coming year. Hope you have a good

Hi,

I spent a fortnight in Jackson Hole last February, staying in Hostel X. I
know you said you're not interested in hostels but it was surprisingly
comfortable; I was staying with my wife so had a double room with en-suite
and a good shower and there is a big area downstairs for lazing round in the
evenings. Like you say most people are there to ride and it was pretty
quiet at night.

One big advantage is you don't need to drive from the town of Jackson (I
think it was about a 30 min drive) as the hostel is in the middle of the
resort, the downside is dining out is fairly limited to about 4
restaurants - we ended up eating in the Mangy Moose most nights.

I remember the road from Jackson to the mountain being pretty flat single
carriageway and was clear the whole time we were there, having said that
almost every thing on the road was 4x4 so it probably gets quite bad.

Dont know if you'd want to stay in Grand Targhee for too long - it is a
really nice resort but we took a day trip there and had ridden all of the
on-piste and several of the more accessible off-piste routes in a day.

OK, that doesn't sound as bad as I thought. Everything I read just talked
about bunk beds hence my lack of interest.
