Car roof Ski Boxes
Hello,
It is off season now. Well we had 15cm (6") snow in the laurentians this week but it is probably gone by now. Here is my off season request for information. Car roof ski boxes were made of ABS. Is it still so? How much should i fear abs exposure to the sun. What do you used to protect the ski box? Armor-all, 303. I know armor-all is damagable to some materials like Latex. Is it ok for ABS? I used 303 for years. How about McNett protector for canoes? Armor-all and 303 are widely available. Something else? A more general question. Old (10+ years) black ski boxes tend to turn whitish. Is this plastic degrading into some kind of powder? Anyone know of a brand of shallow and long (210 cm skis) brand of ski boxes. With mosts ski boxes and my current car i cannot get into the garage. I checked when i boutht the car 3 years ago, maybe something new appeared on the the market since then. Sylvain |

I simply don't worry about it: The ski box lasts at least as long as the car (we tend to keep them for 8-10 years). Our current car (a 2003 diesel from Opel (i.e. Euro GM)) has a Packline ski box which we bought because it is fairly low profile, so it fits inside our (small) garage. We get about 6.7 l/100 km when driving with studded winter tires and the ski box, i.e. about 35 miles/gallon for our metric-challenged friends in the US. A more general question. Here in Norway a large percentage of all cars have ski boxes, and they are all long enough to handle racing xc skis. Terje PS. The ski season officially ended for us this week, we had our last nice xc trip on Monday (crust cruisin' in Rauland), then drove down to the Hvaler archipelago on Tuesday. Today it was hot enough to do my run around the island in running shorts and top. :-) -- - Terje.Mathisen at tmsw.no "almost all programming can be viewed as an exercise in caching" |

Thanks for the reply. I never heard of packline but will check if they sell in Quebec. One inno model (25cm high) was just a bit too short. It was not cheap either. Looks like there is lot more choice in Norway. Here it looks like the market is dominated by 2 or 3 brands. http://www.packasport.com/ Might be the same as Packline, I'm not sure.
Not cheap, but very nice fiberglass boxes, including a low-profile one that I'm pretty sure will hold at least some 210 cm skis. |

The Packasport 60lp is 9" high which would fit my garage door. I will check if there is a local dealer of shipping to Montreal is possible. Thanks a lot. Sylvain fauvel at emt dot inrs dot ca |
