Included in the recently-passed National Defense Authorization Act were a couple of clauses that loosen the rules on Forest Service land swaps so that Mammoth can get title to the land currently occupied by lease where the Main Lodge, Mammoth Mountain Inn, and other associated buildings sit. Mammoth will get those 21 acres, and the Forest Service will get 1500 acres plus a some cash if needed to balance the books on the land value. The changes allow the FS to accept land not contiguous to FS land (such as the lots they currently lease nearby for vehicle maintenance and visitor center structures) and allow cash payments as part of a land-swap deal.

The old Main Lodge has some parts that were built in the 50's such as the big fireplace wall and just grew as more facilities were added, with the old Gondola base station at the far end. It was interesting every year to wander around in the public areas of the building to see what had changed from the year before.

Dave McCoy has stated in his photo-history essays that he bought Mammoth Mountain Inn, originally a separate business as it was headed for bankruptcy. The first thing they did was fill in the swimming pool. I stayed there once, rolled out of bed during a noon-time nap, and sprained my shoulder - it still hurts when I move it the wrong way.

Another treasure down the tubes. The old lodge was charming, even the
weird locker rooms. And organic - grown more than designed. And cheap
enough to feed the kids cafeteria breakfasts on race days.

Everyone knows the replacement will be just like all the other wretched
phony lodges across the continent. The only question is fake Swiss or

will rip the shrinking middle class skiing family's budget to shreds.

I remember back in the days before cell phones (at least before cell phone coverage at Mammoth) how hard it was to find a pay phone that worked. Now they have wi-fi in all the buildings.

Other Mammoth features at risk - metal utensils and china plates in the cafeteria, and free parking. (Pave paradise, and put up a parking lot). I was not unhappy that they upgraded the lifts to HSQ and HS6, but I didn't like the way they widened some trails (cough - Stump Alley) so much that they wiped out the trees separating them from other trails.

Maybe they can declare the original Main Lodge (or some features of it, like the stone fireplace wall) as historic structures and include them in the new building.

The Mammoth bus service is one of the best things about staying there. Several overlapping loops run all over the town every 20 minutes or so, with stops directly at all the lodges and base areas - and its free. The only downer is that it can be crowded during morning rush hour.

An obvious Vailization would be to start charging a buck a ride, reduce the schedule, etc.

Speaking of the old days, there used to be two accommodations in Mammoth
offering dorm style bunks - one was Kitzbühel. Even tho I stayed there,
I've forgotten the name of the other. Does anyone remember?

The Ullr Lodge? I've never been to Mammoth, but if I'd gone when it was
still around that's where I would have stayed.

still around that's where I would have stayed.

I'd pick up chicks at the bar and stay at their place.
