The best XC place ever

If you are considering a XC trip to Europe:

"Olympiaregion Seefeld is justifiably considered Europe's mecca of
cross country skiing. We are proud to be able to tell you that the
unbeaten quality of this destination has been confirmed through the
award of First Prize by the ADAC German Automobile Club in a comparison
of holiday destinations in Europe, Canada and the U.S. Besides that, it
was voted "Ski Area of the Year 2005" by the readers of the DSV
German Ski Association for its Atlas Ski Winter in the category of
"Outstanding Cross Country Trails" and awarded First Prize in a
comparison of 232 nominated areas worldwide."

It's not Royal Gorge?!?!?

Having just come back from a week of glorious skiing around Quebec
City....I'd have to rank it up near or at the top of the list. I think
there are over 39 ski centers within an hours drive....most within 30
minutes. During the week I was there the ski conditions were
perfect....... about 70cm of snow...and temps around -6 C. When I left to
drive back to Burlington (via a night in Montreal) on Jan 13, warmer
conditions and even rain were forecast. By the time I got to Montreal and
later Burlington VT.....warm temps and rain had done their damage. I think
those conditions eventually reached Quebec City....( I'm not sure about that
though). It was a little disconcerting to see so much of Northern Vermont
nearly bare of snow on Saturday Jan 14.

it looks like a European domination of voters on this one, so I guess
america could have a similar award.
I think the winner of sucha thing is not the one with the longest
network, but with a high grooming quality and long networks pluss other
features.

I drove by Seefeld a couple of years ago just to say I had been there,
but it was mainly puddles and slop (early Jan). It looked like a nice
setting, though, and I'm sure I'll get there at some point.

by driving through Seefeld you don=B4t get the slightest hint of the
extent of the area. Most trails wind away from the city into the woods.
Also Leutasch, the scenic neighboring valley, has lots of XC-Trails.
Had a 40km skate there today and didn=B4t take one track twice.
Excellent, daily grooming, more than enough snow, really an excellent
season this year.
Quite an investment has been made there in the last two years in order
to focus on XC.

I=B4ve been to Ramsau a week ago and realized how poor it (meanwhile) is
compared to Seefeld-lots of road crossings, not more than 30km skating
tracks. The roller ski track is not groomed anymore-disappointing,
it=B4s such a nice hilly course.
think twice if you fancy going to Ramsau.=20

Thanks, that is good info. My wife and I have been to Ramsau several
times and like it there, but I'd also like to check out the skiing in
Seefeld. Having Innsbruck close by makes it attractive.

I don't know if one place can qualify as the best place ever. I really
like the Nordmarka trails outside of Oslo. It's hard to beat skiing
there under the lights in front of the famous ski jump with the city
lights below. The Vasaloppet trail is pretty special too. I think
anytime you ski in such an historically important place, it ads
something to the trip. Lahti, Finland has to rank up there too. The
World Cup trails are full of history and spectacular. In North America,
Gatineau Park is huge with beautiful trails above Ottawa, Canada. Big
Thunder, now closed, where they held the '95 World Championships in
Thunder Bay, Canada, was a fabulous trail system. Big sweeping
downhills, overlooks of Lake Superior and Thunder Bay, spectacular. I
like Lake Placid too. You can feel the presence of Wassberg and Mieto
duking it out for the gold, 15K I think. Likewise, Telemark, Wisconsin
is another storied place. It's a beautiful area in the miidle of the
north woods and is connected to the American Birkebeiner Trail, a
freeway of skiing through the forest. As you can tell, I like the
aesthetic and historic places.

I like the aesthetic and historic places.

I like places that have a waxing room and a changing room (this last
one is not the same as the restroom).

sknyski January 17th 06 06:51 PM

Christ, Andrey, let's not start this again about how you and Derrick
need changing rooms, showers, makeup mirrors, and bidets at your local
x-c joint.....
