Hi anyone have an opinion on Thule vs Yakima?

That said, if I were starting over from scratch, I'd probably go with
Yak, mainly because they're much easier to find around these parts.
So if retailers in your area tend to carry one brand more than the
other, you might want to go with the more popular one so it's easier
to find the various attachments and accessories you'll probably wind
up buying in the future. I've heard that the round crossbars Yak
uses allow you to lay the ski racks flat when not in use, thus getting
a slight improvement in fuel economy, but aside from that, I know of
no functional difference.

I agree. If the rack is inside the vehicle, it doesn't really make much
difference what brand it is. Or if you have one at all.

I throw all my racks inside my vehicle. Makes it easier to get them home
where I can put them on my roof having all my tools handy.

Putting the ski rack on the roof at home is great if you're lucky enough
to live in a ski-in ski-out house. For the rest of us it's not such a
great idea.

Thule Rules!!!
I have the Thule Extender for my SUV.
It makes it a dream when loading or unloading as the whole rack extends out
from the car.
Stops you getting crap on your expensive ski wear from rubbing on the cars
body work.
Go have a look at the Thule website. They are featuring it heavily this
winter.

Thule does a great job of making a variety of racks that adapt to almost
any car you can imagine. Thier racks are also solid and last a long
time. I've never used Yakima, so I can't make a comparison.

I have one major complaint about Thule racks - the security sucks. If a
theif wants to take your rack and skis, he can do so in a few short
minutes and with the rack I now own, he wouldn't even need a tool. They
really need to work on their security. This is a recent thing. The older
Thule racks I've owned were very secure.

Since I don't own a Yakima, I have no idea if this is an issue with
Yakima racks, so you're best off if you compare both in the shop.

I drove my ski rack INTO the house. The rental house in South Lake Tahoe.
I stopped outside the house when we arrived Sunday night and unloaded the
skis, then went around through the house to open the garage door. The I
drove into the garaqe. With the right rack arms still up. Tore off the
front one.

Monday night, I was smarter. When I returned fron Heavenly V alley, I drove
the car into the garage with the skis still attached to the left side, and
removed them inside so my wife could take the car to the casinos. She then
drove out of the garage. With the left rack arms still up. Tore off the
rear one.

The next day, I carried the skis inside the car.
