Finally!

Hi All,

I have been grumpily reading posts here for the last month or so
wonder, when is it going to be my turn to ski?!!? We have had a warm
fall, with lots of rain, but no cold and no snow. But the last few days
have been cold enough that the guys at the ski club have been running
the snow cannons non-stop, and the prep is supposed to be ready for
tommorow. Just a 1.1km loop, but it's a start. We had huge snow last
year, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Time to go prep my skis!

The fall has been so lousy that there has been in the local paper talk
of a ski-tunnel for year round use. As part of a highway improvement
project, 1.7km of 2 lane road tunnel is to be retired. They are now
apparently working on plans to use it as a year round ski facility.
1.7km out and back would get pretty boring, but I have fantasies about
taking a long sweaty bike ride to the tunnel in the middle of the
summer, and skiing all afternoon, then riding home. Bliss!

You're a lucky man, congrats.

Wow, such a mountain tunnel (it is, I suppose?) shouldn't take much effort
to get cool enough for snow. Inside a mountain it's just 7ºC year round, I
think? A huge opportunity, I'd pay serious bucks for such boring skiing at
cycling distance. I get to choose indoor alpine centers that way, but that I
just don't care for that the least bit.

Ski hard tomorrow!

Funny my reaction to "alpine" ski centers is to see them as another
opportunity. If we had an indoor alpine ski center close by, rather than
disdain, I'd be trying to get a bunch of XC skiers together to rent the
whole thing for some odd hour and use it for on-snow hill training.

My sister and her daughters skied on manufactured outdoor snow last Friday,
in daytrip driving range of New York City. I could easily joined them, or I
could have paid only $US 15 to do a hill climbing + downhill workout on
outdoor snow at a different closer place on Friday. But not enough closer,
so instead of doing the driving, I did an intense rollerski workout with
Sharon on our nearest steep hills.

No problem with the technology to deliver snow within driving range of New
York City. But my sister had the commitment to do the driving and pay the
money to get her daughters out on snow, and Sharon and I did not have enough
commitment to drive to the snow. Interesting: Her daughters are mainly
downhill skiers, and Sharon and I are mainly not.

Funny, it never occured to me that I might have to pay to go use the
tunnel! I think it may be something run by the equivalent of the parks
department or something, so it may be free. If there is an entry fee,
I'm sure it will be reasonable. Probably have good deals on "season"
passes.

Arhg! The temp went up so they had to turn off the cannons yesterday.
They ar eon again now, but they say no skiing til Thursaday...
