Tahoe Snowboarding Question
 

Hi, we are heading to Lake Tahoe in January. I am from the East Coast
and this will be my first trip to western ski resorts. We are
intermediate boarders and would like the best resorts for long fairly
flat runs. We are staying by Heavenly and were also thinking of
Kirkwood and Squaw. Any help would be appreciated.

Heavenly is awesome. Long runs, good powder (of course depending on weather
condition), various difficulties. I missed the west coast since I moved to
the east for college. I think there are super 2 days or 3 days passes that
you can buy that you could use at ALL 3 of the resorts. I could be wrong,
it's been a while since my last time at Tahoe.

Tahoe Snowboarding Question
 

I just learned to board last season at Kirkwood and it is a great place. I
ended up riding there 17 times. Not as large as most resorts but has good
runs to learn on and have fun on as an intermediate. It is at least worth
the trip one day if your going to be in the Tahoe area.

Lifts 1 and 7 are the easiest to start on for beginners. Then lifts 2, 5,
11, and 4 are good for intermediates. Lift 4 on the backside of the
mountain is awesome if difficult blues and easy blacks are in your skill
level.

Taught a friend of mine to board and he was back there first day so it's not
that difficult. Hope you have a blast on the west coast. Wish I was there,
Kirkwood opens on the 22nd but life has moved me to Switzerland. Guess they
have snow here too!

Skip Heavenly. Its way too crowded and the runs are made more for skiers
than boarders. Lots of places you have to take off the board and walk it.
Go to Kirkwood!

If you are beginner/intermediates Heavenly is a good place; the Nevada side
runs are long and flat and the lifts are fast. Kirkwood has better snow
but not that great for beg/int. Kirkwood has become more popular and it's
a nightmare for beginners on the weekends.

Oh yeah... For intermediate slopes try Alpine Meadows. It's an awesome
intermediate resort. The best!

If your staying near heveanly, it is fun, ride the Nevada side and upper
Cali...stay away from the circus mid-mt. Cali side.

I would also recommend day trips to Sierra @ Tahoe (great intermediate
mtn.), just don't go on the weekend and Kirkwood rules but is about 45
minutes from you but definitely worth the trip!

Squaw is on the North Shore (you will be on South) and depending on road
conditions you may not even be able to get over there, if you can, it takes
about an hour and there are about 5 resorts I would recommend over
there...North Shore is where we ride and there are some awesome local mtns.

Heavenly might be just the ticket if you're not going to be there on a
weekend. It's insane on a weekend there. But there are many long
intermediate runs and they do a very good job grooming. In fact next
time I have a chance to go to Tahoe I'd love to take my alpine rig out
at Heavenly!

It's about a 40 min drive from South Lake Tahoe but worth it.
Personnally I wouldn't go to Heavenly on a bet. The mountain is
made for skiers. Lots of long flats. Lot's of crowds. Lot's of hype.
Very convienent to South Lake Tahoe though.
Squaw is pricey and will be kind of a hual from where you're
staying but is a really nice mountain. They also have very good
lessons for all experience ranges if you want to improve your skills
with a pro.

Yeah, I used to ride at Tahoe and I think Kirkwood was overall my
favorite, taking into account terrain, snow quality and quantity, and
chance of lift closures! That was before I did a lot of alpine, I bet
it would rock to do plates in the morning, and hit the cornices in the
afternoon!

Personnally I wouldn't go to Heavenly on a bet. The mountain is
made for skiers. Lots of long flats. Lot's of crowds. Lot's of hype.
Very convienent to South Lake Tahoe though.

I had some really good days there once I got over the price of a ticket.
Big open wide groomers... which is why I'd love to try it on an alpine
deck.

I found their instructors very hit-or-miss. Some really good ones but
some really bad ones. The terrain is incredible though and if you hit
it on a day when everything's open I can't imagine a better place to be
terrain wise. They do have a lot of lisft closures and in low-snow
years it can be slim pickin's though.
