RFC - The Nordic Skiing Project

THE NORDIC SKIING PROJECT

The plan is to deliver a progressive system of Nordic skiing for
release on DVD in October 1995. The product will provide a drill-based
approach to all aspects of Nordic skiing: dry-land training, with
on-snow classic, skating and telemark disciplines for both
recreational skiers and racers. The DVD is envisioned to provide a
highly interactive toolkit; using menus, multiple angles, alternate
audio tracks, subtitles, and languages. The DVD-ROM features would
also include: technical manuals, in-depth multimedia explanations,
critical analysis primer, biomechanical modeling, narrative script,
hyperlinks to on-line resources, MP3 audio books, photo gallery etc.

The project will be undertaken with the utmost of care and
professional quality production; using expert resources, talent and
broadcast facilities.

PROJECT WEB PORTAL

The web site for the Nordic Skiing Project has been established in the
interests of demonstrating transparency in the process and fostering
effective communications for the project. The site can be found at

SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS

Principle photography starts in September 2004 and is envisioned to
continue through to 01 May 05. Post production will occur throughout
the summer of 2005 for a fall 05 release.

Planning and development has begun. All registered coaches and
instructors in North America were contacted through their associations
or by direct communications soliciting their input. The draft of
technical content was released to all stakeholders in 14 June 2004
with a deadline for review by 15 September 2004. The proposed content
was posted publicly 15 September 2004 with public Request for Comments
(RFC). The draft shot-list will be published 23 Oct 04 and finalized
01 Nov 03. The final narrative script will be frozen 01 April 2005.

Schedule.

A TRANSPARENT AND INCLUSIVE CONSULTATION PROCESS

The mission of the Nordic Skiing Project is to arbitrate an unified
approach to Nordic Skiing Technique by bringing together recognized
experts in the field, generating discussion, consolidating ideas and
arriving at an clear approach to instruction that all stakeholders can
agree on.

The Nordic Skiing Project recognizes and welcomes the involvement of
stakeholders in the North American Nordic Skiing community including
the Canadian Association of Nordic Skiing Instructors, Cross Country
Canada, Biathlon Canada, the US Ski Association, the Professional Ski
Instructor Alliance, key athletes, coaches and instructors. We propose
to consolidate current understanding of Nordic Ski technique and
teaching methods by engaging key principals in discussions and in the
production process to the greatest extent that is practical. Many
Nordic Skiing Organizations have expressed a commitment to thoroughly
review the technical content of the project within the defined review
periods

The means of consultation is a thoughtful, inclusive and transparent
process involving all stakeholders.

WIDER CONSULTATION

The technical content of the project has been informally shared with
US and Canadian National Team members as well as a number of European
World Cup Skiers who have provided endorsements and suggestions.

A general RFC has been published on public world wide web, Internet
News Groups and Customer Mailing Lists to provide ample opportunity to
all coaches and skiing instructors to review and comment on either the
concept, structure, or technical content.

All feedback will receive serious attention and careful scrutiny. The
main narrative audio track will represent the most widely accepted
expert view of Nordic Skiing. Proposed modifications to the technical
content of the Nordic Skiing Project will under-go review by a panel
of experts and require an adequate practical demonstration on skis or
roller-skis before being considered for the primary track.
Notwithstanding, there is room for the expression of alternative views
within the DVD project, by means of multiple audio and subtitle
tracks. Here, we place no restrictions on the views expressed by
individual coaches, instructors or skiers.

Nil returns to this RFC by those persons directly solicited in the
process, will be construed as tacit approval for the material as
presented; given the wide distribution this material over an extended
period of time, the open and genuine invitation to skiers to
participate, and the means to accommodate disparate views.

Good luck with that! I'm going to rent "Back to the Future" tonight
to see if I can go back to 1995 to check it out :-).

It's on their web site too. I guess proofreading is a post-production item.
