South Lake Tahoe recommendations?

I was thinking about South Lake Tahoe at the end of March. I'm
knowledgeless about this area. Does anybody have any recommendations
about places to stay, etc? Evidently, it's not a conventional ski town,
being more spread out, etc.

Specifically, I'd be interested in hotels within walking distance to
reasonable restuaurants and bars, plus easy shuttle transport to
Kirkwood and Heavenly. I'd like to avoid the extra expense/hassle of
car rental.

You are clueless. Rent a car, and visit the casinos.

No interest in gambling. I prefer to waste my money on booze.

You are totally clueless. You don't have to gamble to enjoy the food,
booze, and the entertainment of the casinos.

Dave,

I just returned from a week in Stateline, NV/South Lake Tahoe, CA. I stayed
at the Horizon Casino & Resort, just across the street from Caesar's and
Harrah's. It is a convenient location for everything. All of the casinos are
within one block of each other (on the Nevada side of town). The town is not
as spread out as you may have heard. FREE shuttle busses run constantly to
Heavenly and Kirkwood, as well as Sierra. In addition to the larger
casinos/hotels, there are numerous "Ma & Pa" hotels/motels all throughout
the area. All of the casinos have the usual buffet meals. Food is plentiful
down the "strip", US 50, running the gamut from fast to sophisticated. By
the way, the skiing was excellent at Heavenly.

Are you serious?
I thought you _had_ to be gambling.

I've never been serious.

Then you are a total clueless loser.

Fly into Reno.
There is a shuttle from the airport to the casino/hotels
in South Lake Tahoe.

There are other buses from town to Heavenly (you can also
ride the gondola from the middle of town to the ski area),
Kirkwood (great open skiing, the Wall yum), Sierra (cruiser's
paradise, lots of blues, trails cut through trees, makes you
feel like home (east coast)), and even a bus to SquallyWood
on the north side.

I went this route two years ago and found it adequate. The
bus to Squaw even played a movie for the ride.

This year (both times) I rented a car so I could ski a few
other places, like Alpine with LAL, which I will continue
to return to. Other areas on the north side look very good
and I'd like to try those too. Diamond Peak in Incline,
Northstar, etc.

Can't chat long, gotta get out there - snowed a few again last night.

Fresh snow is like Rocky. You beat it down and it just comes back the
next day for another beating.

Wow, good thing I don't gamble,,,

Good thing I'm not going there. If they're all like Harry over there I'd
have a horrible time.

Dave's right, who needs a car when hitching with your skis is soooooo easy !
