cross country skiing near Oslo
 

Hello...

I'm travelling to Oslo from March 20 - 25. I plan on using a few of
the days to see the sights of Norway, then either cross country or
telemark ski the rest of the time.

Will the cross country conditions at the end of March still be good in
Oslo? I'm aware that the Tryvann area is very close to Oslo, but I'm
not sure if it will be good for telemark or cross country skiing at
that time of year. If not, where near by could anyone recommend for a
day or overnight trip?

Also, I like the idea of skiing from somewhere I can hire gear, to a
cabin or another town staying there overnight then coming returning
the next day. Any recommendations for good trails? Or is this
possible anywhere in Norway?

Telemark, using the left-serviced hills, will almost certainly be OK at
Tryvann that week, but with the bad winter (in the lowlands!) we've had
this year, the snow around Oslo is very much less abundant than normal. :-(

There should be _many_ places where you can do this, take your pick from
mountain areas like Rjukan/Rauland/Finse etc skiing onto Hardangervidda
for a day or two and back.

One (out of a bunch of) possible trip(s) would be to take the train to
Finse (Oslo-Bergen line), then ski 2-4 days between the cabins north or
south of the station (Geiterygghytta, Raggsteindalen, Krækkja,
Heinseter, Tuva etc), ending up at Ustaoset station to take the train
back. Just a waring: There will be a _lot_ of other skiers in the same
area! :-)

My main problem is that I don't know where you can rent touring gear!
(Everyone already have such skis, right? It is only snowboards and fat
carving style downhill skis that are rented out many places. )

I would call or email the DNT in Oslo and ask them!

boots whilst in Norway.

Forget about the tours! That is only if you want/need to ski in a large

For a single-night out-and-back trip you have _many_ options, usually
you could do that easily in Oslo, but this year you would have to start
a little bit outside of the city and the tram system. :-(

I'll have the same problem. I'm considering purchasing a pair of tele
boots whilst in Norway.

In Oslo I believe you can rent xc gear nearby Frognerseteren on the
second-to-last stop on the tram line:
