Mammoth Crowd Question

Hi everyone,

We are heading out to Tahoe in January, this is our first trip out west and
are planning on snow boarding at Heavenly on a Friday and then getting out
of there on Saturday and Sunday. We are thinking about going down to Mammoth
on Saturday, are the weekend crowds real bad on the weekends? We were also
thinking of sierra at Tahoe.

Thanks,
Kevin

Mammoth Crowd Question

Mammoth is an awesome Mountain. Maybe the best.
Heavenly and Sierra aren't even in the same league.

Sierra blows..

With that said. If it's snowing expect a long and treacherous drive fromn
South Lake to Mammoth Lakes. Plan on 5 hours in bad weather and AWD
required! Also, if the weather is bad, most of Mammoth is above treeline
so visibility is a big problem and the summit will not be open; if it is
clear and the summit is open Mammoth rocks!!

Otoh, if you just ride park Mammoth has a high speed quad that services the
Super Park and visibility is not a problem in the lower elevations.

Parking is a problem at Mammoth but crowds aren't..

Mammoth Crowd Question

I wouldn't fo all the way to Mammoth, just too far. You have many options
in Tahoe to avoid the weekend crowds, Kirkwood on the south shore is only a
40 minute drive and is probably the best resort in Tahoe and doesn't get
crazy. Also, check out some of the local smaller mtns..Homewood on the west
shore is my favorite mtn after a storm, powder all day! Mt. Rose and
Diamond Peak are other options that never get crowded.

One other thing to consider (I find this true all the time), if its
storming..none of the mtns. will be packed, even on a weekend, cold wet
weather seems to keep many of the families at home in front of the fire!

I love Mammoth Mtn! That's where I do most of my riding. But... I
wouldn't waste time driving from Tahoe to Mammoth if all you have is
three days. There are plenty of great places to ride in Tahoe. I've
never been to Kirkwood, but my buddies in No. CA love it! Squaw is
another option...

Mammoth Crowd Question

You're over reacting. Weekend crowds at Heavenly can be bad, but not every
Tahoe resort is. In fact, Heavenly is the ONLY place I intentionally avoid
on a regular basis here in Tahoe. And besides, Mammoth is really a
horrendous drive from Tahoe in the winter. I don't recommend that at all.

Stick around the Tahoe area. What kind of boarding do you do? Sierra is a
smaller resort, with a nice park. It has some fairly long beginner to
intermediate groomed runs, some decent tree areas off piste, but not too
much in the way of steeps. Kirkwood would be a great choice for some
excellent snow and very unique terrain, and is also relatively close to
South Shore. And honestly, if you're considering seriously a drive to
Mammoth, then its not out of the question that you should consider Squaw on
the North Shore. This is the premiere Tahoe resort, despite what people say
about Kirkwood. ;-) If the conditions are good in January this year, it'd
be a shame to visit Tahoe and not board at Squaw Valley.

Brian.
