A Little Injury Advice Please
 
Unfortunately, I crashed the weekend before Christmas when I hit a patch of
solid ice, which on that day was called "snow". This was a couple weeks
before the Donner area in California got all of the snow recently, I could
have used some of that earlier. I learned a few things that day since I
only started boarding last year (I'm now 51 and my family had been going up
for a few years prior).

Anyway, I was turning from heelside to toeside right before a shady area
that is normally icy on the best of days. I was a little full of myself I
guess and thought I could get in one more turn before the icy area (this was
around 1pm and the slushy areas were actually riding much better than they
were when icy earlier in the day). When I hit the ice, just as I
transitioned to toeside, I went down so fast I couldn't do anything
conciously. I went down on my knees and apparently my left hand. I say
apparently because I didn't really notice anything wrong with my hand at the
time but I actually cracked the scaphoid bone. It's a ******* of a bone
with an unusually long recovery time and I'm currently in a cast.

Now to the question, my knees were screaming for at least 5 minutes sitting
there on the "snow". I'm not sure I have ever felt a more sustained pain in
my life. After a while I was able to continue boarding for a few more runs.
Roughly four weeks later my knees are still slightly painfull to the touch
and I thought they were doing better. Yesterday I went back up, cast and
all with some knee pads! Wrist was fine, first time I went to my knees
though, just after binding up nothing violent, I thought I had gone back to
the original crash. Very painfull. I realize the knees are just bone and
other non-meaty things but, will it be next year before they feel normal
again?? It's been roughly 4 or 5 weeks since the original injury and they
are still tender to the touch but other than direct pressure feel fine.

After going to my knees and feeling they weren't that recovered sure made me
tentative the rest of the day. Am I dealing with the knees for the rest of
the year??

There's a bunch of meaty things in your knees. See your doctor.

Possibly brusied the bone, get medical advice ASAP and try rubbing
arnica cream on the tender area twice daily.

You *really* should see a doctor. There are quite a few things that can
go wrong with your knees, and if left unattended some of them can
become chronic. But you need to see a specialist, and ideally you
should get MR pictures.

A few years back I crashed onto my knees (icy park, jump too big, shouldn't
have been there etc.etc.). Went down with enough force to break one of the
knee guards I was wearing. One knee was really swollen and eventually I went
to the doc. Luckily there didn't seem to be any real damage but he gave me a
load of ibuprofen for the swelling which sorted it out. He said I probably
had Bursitis but it was impossible to tell for sure without a scan. Don't
seem to have had any problems since.

You can't be too careful though, it's easy to damage a ligament so you
really should see a doc, even if it seems to cure itself.

Quit your crying!! Your knees are bruised. Tape up the cast and get
back out there. It's a tough sport and you don't have that many years
left.. Next time take it in the face!

Thanks for the tip, og. I dried all my tears and you were right I don't
feel a thing now. Maybe your knees are just tougher than mine since you're
probably down on them so often. Actually, I haven't been hanging around
here enough to know if you are a kidder, or just a kid. Doesn't matter
though. I'm guessing you're pretty far from being 50. Let's see if you're
still boarding by then... or what other sport you take up when you get
there.

Really, to everyone else thanks for the responses. I was hoping someone
with some previous knee-to-ice experience would have some sort of timetable
on when they might feel normal again. I didn't go into it before but the
orthopedist that I saw for the wrist checked out the knees and no ligament
type damage. Probably bone bruises, definitely not the garden variety
bruise though.

Now og..... go to bed!!!

No knee-to-ice experience, but a knee did get a little twist last April.
It didn't feel right until August. My other knee has had problems for
years. This year I'm using a Cho-Pat (cho-pat.com) "Dual Action Knee
Strap" on my problem knee and it has helped keep me on the slopes and
pain away.
