FWIW, I also enjoyed "Sick: A Cultural History of Snowboarding" by Susanna
Howe. It's a few years old now but still a good read.

spandex and brutal dayglow colors?

You mean a terrain park? Skiers use them too. Were there any areas
roped off 'just for those no good boarders'?

I kind of take issue with that - first, putting the brand name 'Olympic'
on it doesn't change the mainstream perception that snowboarding is just
about riding pipe, big air and jibbing. If anything it seemed to just
further that image, even with a few moments of Chris Klug and GS. And
if you go back to that point in time I recall a bit of irritation by
some involved that boarding came under the control of the skiing
powers.

definitely should say SOUTH Lake Tahoe (I would think)...

maybe someone did a search and replace on all occurrences of "S.", or
their brain was just switched off for those few seconds :-)

Yeah, Avalanche is SLT. Winterstick is SLC.

[Hello, I wanted to know if someone out there could tell me a little more about my Burton Backhill.
I bought a Burton Backhill from a surf shop in 1981 or 1982. It is signed by Jake Burton Carpenter in red just above the made in Vermont print.
It is all wood with navy print "Burton Backhill" on the top deck and the bottom. It has a black rope with a red handle threaded through the two hole at the top of the board. It has two metal fins on the bottom with a round tail. The rear foot binding has a large rubber band type binding and the front foot has a waterski type binding without a heel.
I do not know what year this snowboard is I only know about the time I bought it.
